SPIRITUAL DIRECTION: GIVING AND RECEIVING |
Spiritual Direction has a history as long as men and women gathered in faith. Gift to those who seek direction precisely because they seek to grow in their relationship with God in itself and in ways that influence their relationships with themselves and others, spiritual direction is an ancient and treasured ministry in the church. In this course this ministry will be explored in ways that serve both those who ask for direction and those who serve as directors. An introduction to the ministry itself, its disciplines, limits and gifts and discernment will be among the topics considered in this practical course. The course will include presentations, role playing and case studies. Students will be asked to write short reflection papers.
This course trains the student in the conduct of worship as a deacon with emphasis on understanding the purpose of liturgical actions and ceremonies. Focus is put on the deacon's role at the Eucharist and other rites of the Church with opportunity to gain functional experience in each one. Vessels and vestments are identified and the proper use of hymnody is taught.

STEPHEN MINISTRY, PART II |
This course is designed for the formation of the care-giver and will develop your sense of your own pastoral identity, and enrich your human awareness and understanding by developing your skills in listening to and recognizing feelings and emotions in others and developing healthy skills in assertive behavior (establishing healthy boundaries). Stephen Ministers express God's care through their lives to others.
Beginning with the Diocesan School Semester of September 2008 there will be new required course work for all those in the Diaconal Process commencing with the second and continuing through the third year of the curriculum. This course is titled "Diaconal Colloquium." The purpose of the Colloquium is to guide and monitor the formation of diaconal nominees, develop ministry, and construct 'ministry plans.' During the first year of classes Diaconal nominees will outline a ministry plan. That plan will be reviewed, modified and monitored during the second year. Mentor assignments in the various ministry specializations will also be made in the first year.
In addition, ample time will be allowed at each class meeting for ministry plan assessment and community development. The course work will include various aspects of ministry such as congregational development, family/organizational systems, opportunities for 'Safe-Guarding God's Children,' and 'Anti-Racism,' Stewardship, Outreach, and Evangelism training, to name but a few.
As of the 2010 Fall Semester, there is no tuition cost associated with this class. Students who are not diaconal nominees are not required to take this course in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.
